02 Friday september, 22nd week in ordinary time.
Come with joy into the presence of the Lord.
We are celebrating the presence of a very important person, the bridegroom, Jesus Christ. When love of the bridegroom and love for our brothers and sisters are also present the reign of love and justice prevails. The time when the bridegroom is taken from us, are the times when we fail to help, love our brothers and sisters in need; times when we, instead of helping them, we are oppressing them and committing injustice to them. And so that’s the time that we have to fast, to do penance, to restore our relationship with Jesus and our brothers and sisters; to be loving forgiving and just.
1st reading: Col 1:15-20
Gospel: LK 5:33-39
The scribes and Pharisees aked Jesus, “the disciples of John fast often and say long prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why is it that your disciples eat and drink?” then Jesus said to them, “you can’t make wedding quests fast while the bridegroom is with them. But later the bridegroom will be taken from them and they will fast in those days.”
Jesus also told them this parable,”no one tears a pice from a new coat to put it on an old one; otherwise the new will be torn and the piece taken from the new will not match the old. No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new will be burst the skins and be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed as well. But new wine must be put into fresh skins. Yet no one who has tasted old wine is eager to get new wine, but says: the old is good.”

God himself is my help.
Will not our common sense tell us what should we do faced with the same situation as Jesus’ disciples? If we are tired and hungry from a long journey most probably we’ll also pick some fruits and satisfy our hunger. The Pharisees were almost furious because the disciples picked grains on a Sabbath. Sabbath for the Jews is an insituation that should be followed and respected no matter what. God created Sabbath to uplift and celebrate life. Any law that enslave a human being and does not promote its welfare is not life giving and therefore far from the will of God. The Pharisees failed to use their common sense because they were blinded by the strict observance of the law. The Pharisees chose to preseve the insitution above the human person. Yet the law of love tells us, “human person above all things,” Jesus was clear about this.
1st reading: Col 1:21-13
Gospel:LK 6:1-5
One sabbath, Jesus was going through the corn fields and his disciples began to pick heads of grain crushing them in their hands for food. Some of the Pharisees aked them, “ why do you do what is forbidden on the sabbath?”
Then Jesus spoke, “have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry? He enter the house of God, took and ate the bread of the offering and even gave some to his men, though only priests are allowed to eat that bread.” And Jesus added, “the Son of Man is Lord and rules over the sabbath.”
