Nếu cần tóm tắt nội dung của tất cả Lời Chúa mà Hội Thánh mời ta suy niệm hôm nay trong một từ thôi, theo bạn đó có thể là từ gì?
Trong bài đọc 1, Môsê nói với dân chúng: “Anh em hãy vâng nghe lệnh truyền của Đức Chúa để được chúc phúc.” Thánh Phaolô nói trong bài đọc 2: “Tất cả những ai tin vào Đức Giêsu đều được nên công chính.” Cuối cùng, trong bài Tin Mừng, Đức Giêsu bảo: “Anh em hãy xây nhà mình trên đá bằng việc thực hành những điều Thầy dạy.” Theo ý kiến của mình, ta có thể tóm tắt tất cả các ý tưởng trên bằng chữ TIN.
Tin là thế nào?
Điều đầu tiên ta cần nói ngay với nhau là: Tin không chỉ là “tin có”. Thỉnh thoảng ta vẫn nghe ai đó nói: “Tôi cóc tin có Thượng Đế !” Mình dám nói với bạn rằng 99,9% những người nói như thế không ý thức hết điều họ đang nói. Chứng minh rằng Thiên Chúa không hiện hữu là một điều vô cùng khó khăn, nếu không muốn nói là không thể! Nó còn khó hơn việc phủ nhận sự tồn tại của tình yêu. Khi ta thấy có người nổi giận hay thờ ơ khi nghe đề cập đến Thượng Đế, thông thường lý do không phải vì họ không tin có Ngài, mà là vì một điều khác, ví dụ: họ bực bội, chán nản, nổi loạn vì không thấy điều mình mong ước xảy ra như ý muốn.
Vậy tin là thế nào?
Tin ở đây là tin – theo. Tin – theo là tin vào và làm theo. Tin vào Chúa nghĩa là chân nhận vị trí tối cao và vai trò không thể thiếu được của Chúa trong đời mình. Làm theo Chúa nghĩa là đem ra thực hành Lời của Người. Tin và làm là hai mặt không thể tách rời của cùng một thực tại duy nhất. Thánh Gia-cô-bê nói rất súc tích: “Thật thế, một thân xác không hơi thở là một xác chết, cũng vậy, đức tin không có hành động là đức tin chết.” (Gc 2:26) Chúa Giêsu thì bảo: “Không phải bất cứ ai thưa với Thầy: ‘Lạy Chúa! Lạy Chúa”’ là sẽ được vào Nước Trời cả đâu! Nhưng chỉ ai thi hành ý muốn của Cha Thầy là Đấng ngự trên trời mới được vào thôi….Chính anh em là ánh sáng cho trần gian… ánh sáng của anh em phải chiếu giãi trước mặt thiên hạ, để họ thấy những công việc tốt đẹp anh em làm, mà tôn vinh Cha của anh em, Đấng ngự trên trời.” (Mt 7: 21; 5: 14,16)
Những công việc nào được coi là tốt đẹp theo ý Cha? Có phải đó là những việc vĩ đại, dễ gây chú ý như khả năng nói tiên tri, trừ ma đuổi quỷ, làm phép lạ không? Không, nếu thiếu một chất liệu nền tảng (Mt 7:22-23). Chính chất liệu này đã làm cho các môn đệ đầu tiên của Thầy Giêsu khiến những ai gặp họ phải thốt lên: “Những người mang danh Kitô hữu này là ai mà họ lại yêu thương nhiều đến thế?” Phaolô, người bắt bớ gay gắt các tín hữu đầu tiên, sau khi trở thành Kitô hữu đã quả quyết rằng: “Giả như tôi có nói được các thứ tiếng…giả như tôi được ơn nói tiên tri,…biết hết mọi điều bí nhiệm…có được tất cả đức tin đến chuyển núi dời non, mà không có tình yêu thương, thì tôi cũng chẳng là gì.” (1Cr 13: 1-3) Chất liệu ấy là tình yêu theo gương mẫu tình yêu Thiên Chúa.
Mình biết một sinh viên năm thứ 4 đại học. Mặc dù rất thông minh vẫn bị các bạn kém thông minh hơn chê là “ngu”. Anh ấy thông minh bởi vì học đâu hiểu đấy, thậm chí còn dạy lại cho các bạn cùng lớp. Nhưng anh bị coi là “ngu” bởi vì anh chọn sống “ngược dòng”. Bạn biết đấy, chuyện quay cóp trong môi trường giáo dục bao năm nay là chuyện được coi là “bình thường”, “ai cũng hiểu chỉ một người không hiểu”, nên anh bị xem là “gã khờ” dại dột dám sống sự trung thực của mình. Có người hỏi sao anh dại thế, anh trả lời: “Sự dại dột của Thiên Chúa còn gấp trăm ngàn lần sự khôn ngoan của thế gian.” (1Cr 1:25) Người ấy chỉ biết lắc đầu chào thua trong khi Chúa trên cao gật đầu mỉm cười.
Mình cũng biết một phụ nữ khả ái nọ. Chị tài giỏi trong nhiều lĩnh vực. Dẫu rằng chị sống bằng trái tim nhân hậu, xung quanh chị vẫn có những kẻ hay ganh ghét vu oan những điều xấu xa cho chị. Trong cái thế giới bon chen để sống còn này, người ta chê chị quá hiền lành; nhưng cũng trong cái xã hội ăn miếng trả miếng hôm nay, người ta lại thầm ngưỡng mộ ánh sáng trong tâm hồn chị. Khi mình hỏi làm sao chị có thể nhẫn nại và bao dung như vậy, chị nói: “Thiên Chúa là “Đấng thấu suốt mọi bí ẩn” hiểu lòng tôi. Còn chuyện bị người khác hiểu lầm, vu oan giáng họa, xin nhường lại quyền xét xử cho Người. Tôi chỉ xin Chúa giúp tôi biết sống tha thứ như Người vẫn hằng tha thứ cho tôi.”
Chắc hẳn còn nhiều người xung quanh ta đang tin-theo Thầy Giêsu như vậy, bạn nhỉ?! Hơn bao giờ hết, thế giới tụi mình đang sống cần những chứng nhân dám can trường sống các giá trị tốt đẹp của Tin Mừng. Trong cuộc đời còn nhiều bóng tối, mình cùng nhau thắp lên một ngọn lửa của bình an và hoà nhã, thứ tha cùng tôn trọng, bao dung và bác ái, nhẫn nại với khiêm nhường, can trường và trung trực, bạn nhé! Như thế, ta đang tỏ cho thế giới biết rằng mình tin – yêu Giêsu rất chân thành.

Believe - Follow

If we need to summarize all the readings that the Church invites us to reflect on this Sunday in only one word, what would it be?
In the first reading, Moses says to the people: “Obey the commandments of the Lord so you will be blessed.” Saint Paul affirms in the second reading: “All those who believe in Jesus Christ will be justified.” Finally, Jesus tells us in the Gospel: “Build your house on rock by putting my teaching into practice.” In my humble opinion, we can summarize all of these readings in one word: BELIEVE.
What does it mean by “believe”?
The first thing we need to say is that to “believe” does not simply mean to think that God exists. At times we hear people say: “I don’t believe in the existence of God!” Here I dare to say that 99.9% of those who say it do not know what they are talking about since proving that God does not exist is extremely difficult, even impossible! It is more even difficult than denying the existence of love. When someone gets angry at or indifferent to hearing about God, this behavior is normally resulting from another reason; for example, he/she does not see things happen the way they expect.
Then what does “believe” mean?
Believe here has a twofold signification: have faith and follow. Having faith in God is admitting his sovereign position and indispensable role in our life. Following God is accepting and practicing his Word. These are two inseparable aspects of a same reality. Saint James says it succintly: “For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” (James 2:26) Jesus tells us: “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven…. You are the light of the world…. your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt 7: 21; 5: 14,16)
Then what would be a work considered in tune with God’s will? Would it be something big that attracts a lot of attention, such as prophesying, driving out demons or performing miracles? No, if there lacks one fundamental element (Mt 7:22-23). This element is the thing that made those who encountered the first followers of Jesus comment: “Who are these so-called Christians that love others so much?” Paul of Tarsus, who persecuted these first followers, after his conversion, proclaimed: “If I speak in human and angelic tongues… if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.” (1Cr 13: 1-2) Evidently, this element is our love modeled on the love of God.
I know a senior (fourth year college student). Though he is quite intelligent, he is still mocked as “stupid” by his classmates who are less intelligent than him. He is intelligent because he can even teach his friends again the lesson they have just studied together. But he is considered “stupid” since he often “swims against the current”; for example, while his friends cheat in the exam, he refuses to do so. Someone asked him why he was not wise in this matter, he replied: “…the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.” (1Cr 1:25) That person shook his head and walked away while God nodded His head with a smile!
I also know a lovely lady. She is quite good at doing different things. Although she treats others with kindheartedness and gentleness, some people around her are jealous and wrongly accusing her of evil things. When I asked how she could still be patient and tolerant in all this, she responded: “God who “sees all secrets” knows me. As for the things of which I am wrongly accused, I let God be the judge. I only ask God to help me forgive them as He always forgives me.”
Dear friend, there are still people as such around us who continue to have faith in Jesus and follow Him faithfully. More than ever, the world needs generous and courageous witnesses of the Gospel. In the midst of darkness, let us light up a fire of peace, gentleness, forgiveness, tolerance, respect, honesty, patience, humility, courage and charity. In that way, we show to the world that we lovingly believe in Jesus.

Croire et Suivre

Si on a besoin de résumer toutes les lectures d’aujourd’hui en un mot, lequel serait-il?
Dans la première lecture, Moise dit au peuple: “Écoutez les commandements du Seigneur votre Dieu pour obtenir bénédiction.” Dans la deuxième lecture, Saint Paul affirme: “La justice de Dieu est donnée à tous ceux qui croient en Jésus Christ.” Enfin, Jésus lui-même dit dans l’Évangile: “Bâtissez votre maison sur le roc en pratiquant ce que je vous dit.” Alors à mon avis, nous pouvons résumer tout cela dans un mot: Croire.
Qu’est-ce que “croire” veut dire?
Tout d’abord, il faut dire que “croire” s’agit pas seulement de croire que Dieu existe. Parfois, on entend quelqu’un dire: “Je ne crois pas que Dieu existe !” J’ose dire que 99,9% de ceux qui dissent cela ne savent pas ce dont ils parlent. Le fait de justifier que Dieu n’existe pas est extrêmement difficile, même impossible, à faire. Il est plus difficile de nier l’existence de l’amour. Quand on voit quelqu’un qui est en colère ou indifférent quand il entend parler de Dieu, ce n’est pas parce qu’il ne croit pas en l’existence de Dieu dans un stricte sens, mais normalement c’est parce que des choses qu’il veut voire arriver n’arrivent pas comme il veut.
Alors, qu’est-ce que “croire” veut dire?
Croire ici signifie deux aspects: croire et suivre. Croire en Dieu, c’est-à-dire reconnaitre la souveraineté de Dieu et son rôle indispensable dans notre vie. Suivre Dieu, c’est faire sa volonté. Ce sont les deux côtés inséparables d’une même réalité. Saint Jaques écrit succintement: “En effet, comme le corps qui ne respire plus est mort, la foi qui n'agit pas est morte.” (Jaques 2:26) Jésus nous dit: “Il ne suffit pas de me dire: ‘Seigneur, Seigneur!’ pour entrer dans le Royaume des cieux; mais il faut faire la volonté de mon Père qui est aux cieux…Vous êtes la lumière du monde… que votre lumière brille aux yeux des hommes, pour qu’en voyant vos bonnes actions ils rendent gloire à votre Père qui est aux cieux.” (Mt 7: 21; 5: 14,16)
Quelles actions peuvent être considérées comme bonnes selon la volonté de Dieu? Est-ce de faire quelque chose de grand, d’attirant comme la capacité de prophétiser, de chasser les démons ou de faire des miracles? Non, s’il manque d’un élément fondamental. (Mt 7:22-23) Cet élément est ce qui a fait dire aux les païens quand ils ont rencontré les premiers chrétiens: “Qui sont ces personnes qui tant aiment les autres?” Paul, qui a persécuté les premiers chrétiens, proclame après sa conversion: “J'aurais beau parler toutes les langues de la terre et du ciel,…J'aurais beau être prophète, avoir toute la science des mystères et toute la connaissance de Dieu, et toute la foi jusqu'à transporter les montagnes, s'il me manque l'amour, je ne suis rien…” (1Cr 13: 1-3) Cet élément est l’amour selon le modèle de l’amour de Dieu.
Je connais un étudiant. Malgré le fait qu’il est intélligent, il est dit ‘stupide’ par ses amis qui sont moins intélligents que lui. Il est intélligent parce qu’il peut rapprendre à ses amis les lecons que le professeur leur apprend. Mais il est considéré “stupide” parce qu’il va “à contre-courant.” Par exemple, autour de lui, d’autres étudiants trichent dans un examen, mais lui, il refuse de faire cela. Quelqu’un lui a demandé: “Pourquoi tu choisit d’agir d’une manière stupide?” Il a répondu: “…la folie de Dieu est plus sage que l'homme.” (1Cr 1:25)
Je aussi connait une femme qui est douée pour faire beaucoup de choses. Bien qu’elle ait un bon coeur, il existent autour d’elle des gens qui sont jaloux et qui l’accusent d’avoir fait des choses mauvaises. Quand je lui ai demandé comment elle pouvait être telle patiente et tolérante, elle m’a dit: “C’est Dieu qui me comprend. À propos des accusations mensongères contre moi, je laisse Dieu faire le jugement. Je demande simplement à Dieu de m’aider à les pardonner comme Dieu toujours me pardonne.”
Je crois qu’il y a de bons disciples de Jésus comme ceux-dessus autour de nous. Plus que jamais, notre monde a besoin des témoins fidèles et courageux aux valeurs de l’Évangile. S’il existe encore les ténèbres dans notre lieu quotidien, que nous allumions une lumière de paix, de guérison, de partage, de pardon, de respect, de charité et de foi. Ainsi nous montrons que nous croyons en Jésus.
